The calculation route

In n = cv, v is measured in dm3. Volumes recorded in cm3 must therefore be divided by 1000.

How to Use the Titration Calculator

The calculator follows the standard titration route:

volume and concentration → moles → equation ratio → unknown quantity

1. Choose the type of titration

Select the appropriate section:

  • Acid–base titration
  • Redox titration

The calculation method is fundamentally the same in both cases.

2. Enter the titre results

Enter the titres obtained during the titration.

Exclude the rough titre, then select the concordant results. The calculator uses the selected titres to calculate the mean titre.

Do not simply select every result. Only measurements that agree sufficiently closely should be used.

3. Check the balanced equation

Enter or select the balanced chemical equation for the reaction.

The equation coefficients determine the mole ratio. A correct calculation cannot be made from an unbalanced equation.

4. Enter the known information

Supply the requested values, such as:

  • the concentration of the standard solution;
  • the volume transferred using the pipette;
  • the mean titre delivered from the burette;
  • any mass or formula mass required by the question.

Enter volumes in cm³ and concentrations in mol dm⁻³.

5. Follow the calculation

The calculator displays each stage:

  1. Convert the relevant volume from cm³ to dm³.
  2. Calculate the known amount using
    moles = concentration × volume in dm³.
  3. Apply the mole ratio from the balanced equation.
  4. Calculate the required concentration, mass or other unknown quantity.

6. Check the reasoning

Do not treat the displayed answer as a substitute for working.

Check that:

  • the equation is balanced;
  • the correct titres were selected;
  • volumes were converted to dm³;
  • the equation coefficients were used correctly;
  • the final answer has appropriate units.

The mole is at the heart of the calculation. One substance cannot be converted directly into another without first calculating the amount in moles.
